Trailing is the aspect of wildlife tracking that involves following and finding animals, allowing us to observe them undetected. It is a great way to really understand the lives of the animals we are tracking while becoming more immersed in the natural world around us.
In this workshop we will look at the fundamentals of trailing wildlife through the landscape. Beginning with easier substrates we will cover the basics of finding footprints and other signs along the trail. We’ll then gradually progress to areas where there are intermediate trails that are more difficult to detect.
Using a variety of exercises and learning methods we will explore:
Seeing tracks in different types of ground
Spotting other clues
Lost trail drill
Stealth and camouflage
Bird alarms and tracking with your ears
Understanding animal behaviour
Trailing etiquette
Sharpening our senses
Dan has a Level 3 certificate in Trailing and a Professional certificate in Track & Sign from CyberTracker Conservation (the world standard in certifying trackers in the field).
